Afternoon tea at Aqua Shard

I love The Shard. I love afternoon tea. Throw those two together and you get the perfect London afternoon…

Since opening last year, Aqua Shard has become a firm favourite of mine, so I obviously couldn’t wait to check out the afternoon tea when it launched a while back. For such a contemporary building and restaurant, the afternoon tea is quite traditional, with a focus on real quality rather than a gimmicky themed offering you seem to find everywhere these days.

There’s the sweet stuff: a Shard-shaped cake, fruit mille-feuille, lemon meringue tart, panna cotta and chocolate truffle. The freshly backed scones come with homemade jams. The selection of sandwiches was classic, but they all have a bit of a twist – the chicken with lavender mayonnaise was definitely my favourite. Although I’m not a tea drinker myself, there’s a huge choice of speciality teas by the Rare Tea Company, and a glass of Veuve Clicquot if you opt for the champagne tea.

With spectacular views over the city and in such a modern setting, the afternoon tea at Aqua Shard feels wonderfully traditional and British, giving you the best of both worlds in one go. Perfect for a girly afternoon or to take your family (but make sure you book! It gets busy…)
