Tucked away in a secret garden somewhere in Regent’s Park, young accessories designer Sophia Webster‘s “Insect Slumber Party” had every editor ooh-ing and aaah-ing like little girls who’d just walked into Barbie’s wardrobe. As the rain was pouring down outside we all huddled inside the tent, packed to the brim with flowers and colourful butterflies, smiley models having a blast at their slumber party, combined with a soft soundtrack of Katy B singing in the background. Damp feet aside, the magical atmosphere was almost enough to make us believe it was a gorgeous summer day.
If there were any doubters left that Sophia Webster was a superstar designer in the making, then this SS14 collection will prove them forever wrong: Sophia designs the shoes and bags of every girl’s wildest dreams, succeeding at creating the impossible combination of cute and sexy. The negligee-clad models were having a blast on their flowerbeds, playing with the crowd, showing off their fluffy notebooks, funny slogan clutches and of course, the shoes.
Oh, the shoes… inspired by insects (the collection was entitled Supa Dupa Fly), there were butterflies, ladybugs and flower references as Sophia showed us everything from over-the-knee butterfly-gladiator heels (seriously, it should be so wrong but it’s so right), to mules, sandals and cute flats. It was fun and quirky and cute and cheeky and sexy and I had a really hard time dragging myself away at the end. It was such a confident presentation, it’s hard to believe this is only Sophia’s 3rd collection since leaving her position as Nicholas Kirkwood’s assistant. There’s definitely much more to come from this incredible young talent (like a collaboration with J.Crew for spring! Hurrah!), so make sure you keep an eye out…
