I’ve been very blessed to have a great walk-in wardrobe, but sadly not with wardrobe organising skills. I’m messy to say the least, have far more clothes than is truly necessary and I’m always trying on different outfits which then end up on the floor, not back where they belong. Every bit of my wardrobe was stuffed with things and I could never find what I needed. A couple of months ago I had a Wardobe Detox session with Francesca Salih of Wardrobe Mistress and in the space of a couple of hours, she turned my wardrobe (and my life, to be honest) around.
When we first started the detox, she took out everything from my wardrobe and gradually went through every item and made me think of the last time I wore it. The result was shocking – over half of what I was storing I wasn’t actually wearing. A couple of years ago I gained a bunch of weight, yet I never really removed those items from my wardrobe. The things I wasn’t wearing were either going to charity or a storage box for later use. I now have a “skinny box”, packed full of great stuff waiting for me when I get back to my old size (which I slowly am, thankfully) – a great bit of encouragement!
Getting rid of a lot of your clothes isn’t easy. Girls often place emotional and sentimental value on items of clothing or accessories because of memories (special occasions you wore it, who you got it from, etc), but those things were really clogging up my wardrobe, making it harder to maintain. I definitely have some mild hoarder tendencies and wanted to hang on to everything, but Francesca powered through even though at times it wasn’t easy for me! In the space of a couple of hours, my wardrobe was reduced to what I was actually wearing, which was less than half of what was originally in there – truly incredible stuff!
After the discarding came the rebuilding. Francesca made me buy a little footstool so I could reach the upper shelves, making my wardrobe even bigger, and then she started reorganising. Pretty soon my (half-empty) wardrobe started looking amazing. She added little visual touches like pictures and displays which turned my walk in wardrobe into a place I want to hang out in, not just to get my stuff and leave. After she left I continued working on making it even better: investing in some Muji perspex displays for jewellery and sunglasses, and although it still gets messy at times, I now can see my clothes properly again. When it comes to shopping it has also changed me completely: I’m definitely more considerate and ask myself “when will I wear this”, rather than impulse buy. I seem to look more for essentials, not just getting every thing I like. My detox has completely changed the way I shop, the way I dress and made me more organised in general, not just my wardrobe.
I can only recommend a proper wardrobe detox to anyone! If you feel you are in need of a “Wardrobe Mistress” then book in for a Detox with Francesca, or if you want to try your own Wardrobe Detox, here’s some of Francesca’s tips:
