In another life, I dreamt of being an architect. Sadly I sucked at physics, so somehow I ended up here instead, but my interest and passion for architecture always remained. I’ve always admired Zaha Hadid for her incredible designs, whether that’s buildings or bridges or furniture, so I was of course pretty excited to hear about her collaboration with Dutch shoe label United Nude (founded by Rem D. Koolhaas, an architect himself and nephew of the legendary Rem Koolhaas, another favourite of mine).
As I expected, the NOVA shoe definitely pushes all boundaries of what is considered a shoe and uses Hadid’s trademark curves and use of high tech materials (metallic chromed vinyl rubber on the upper, the hidden platform and heel are composed of fiberglass and the outsole is made of rubber). There’s a thin line between art and design, and Zaha Hadid definitely balances that line with the Nova heels. The shoe has become an artwork, an item to admire, not necessarily to wear. I fully appreciate it from an aesthetic point of view, although I don’t see myself wearing them – not that this is really the point with this collaboration, I think.
The Zaha Hadid x United Nude Nova Shoe is available for pre-order in silver chromed, black chromed and rose gold chromed, limited to 100 pairs per color. At £1300 for a pair, I’d probably frame them rather than wear them… What do you think?
