I consider myself to be pretty capable in the kitchen, but I never bake. I’m not a huge fan of all things sweet (except for chocolate!), so there’s really no point for me to spend hours trying out recipes I simply won’t eat. So when River Island asked me if I wanted to participate in their version of the Great British Bake Off, I surprised myself by agreeing to do it. Myself and some amazing other bloggers and magazines were asked to bake a Victoria Sponge cake, to be judged by the River Island team…

I was sent a basket with all the ingredients I needed, so it should have been simple enough. Wrong. It became glaringly obvious I didn’t have a clue and it would turn out a bit rubbish. Then I remembered some girly cookie cutters a friend once gave me, so I figured if it won’t win on taste, it at least would look cute. I just found out they chose my heel-shaped mini Victoria Sponges as the “Most Fashionable” – so I guess it could have gone worse…
