I spent a couple of days with my family in sunny Marrakech over the Christmas break (see my other Marrakech post here) and got to stay in the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever set foot in, the brand new Taj Palace Marrakech. The hotel is set over a grand 55 acres in the Palmeraie area of Marrakech with the snowy Atlas mountains in the background, and perfectly fuses Moroccan and Indian styles together in the ultimate luxurious setting.
It’s taken an epic 7 years to build the hotel, and although it will be opening any day now, whilst we were there the Taj Palace was still in the soft opening phase, which means giving it a proper review would be a little unfair – although if my experience is anything to go by, it will definitely join the ranks of being one of the best and most beautiful hotels in the world. The Taj Palace takes the word “grand” to another level: a breathtaking driveway to the hotel, triple height ceilings, a number of enormous bars and restaurants, the most beautiful marble pool, and even their standard rooms are the size of a London penthouse.
Sure, there were some teething problems – the spa was sadly unfinished, and as we there were just a handful of guests at the hotel at the time, not all restaurants were open to us, and there were still lots of little things left to sort out – but even despite that, it still ranks as one of my favourite hotel visits in a long while. The staff were so friendly and eager (having waited for the hotel to open to guests for so long, you can imagine the sheer excitement of having us there) and they treated us like kings and queens. Nothing was too much or too complicated to sort out. The food was Michelin star quality, having sampled some of the Japanese, Indian and French menus. The spa – although we didn’t really get to use it – will be incredible, complete with 2 enormous hammams and indoor pool.
As a whole, the Taj Palace brings old-fashioned luxury and service in an incredible decor. Perhaps one day if I’m lucky enough, I’ll get to return and see it in its full glory, but for now I’m just pretty pleased I got to be one of their very first guests.
Oh, and if you somehow think the hotel looks familiar, the hotel it is where they filmed Sex And The City 2 (supposedly set in Abu Dhabi). The girls stayed in the Royal Suite which I got to visit, and is every bit as grand as you can imagine…
