By now, you’ll probably have seen pictures of the long-awaited Maison Martin Margiela collaboration with H&M, so it’s not really a surprise anymore, but seeing the collection in real life really brings home how different this collection is, so here are some of my thoughts:
When I first heard MMM would be working with H&M, I was a little worried. Previously, the big brand collaborations have always managed to translate the label’s aesthetics to introduce it to the the masses – like Marni did so wonderfully – but Margiela is a notoriously difficult label to wear, and I didn’t feel it was really suited to something like this. It could go two ways: either they toned down MMM’s style to make it more commercial, or they could just go with it… and I’m happy to tell you it’s the latter. This is most definitely a collection for Fashion Lovers, not necessarily for the masses.
The collection consists mostly of re-editions of iconic Maison Martin Margiela pieces, from the oversized sleeping-bag style coats, the bra body, deconstructed pieces, tongue-in-cheek accessories like the candy wrapper clutches and watch belts, and much more. I think a lot of the clothing needs to be seen worn to really get a feel for how it looks and doesn’t have great hanger appeal, but the H&M girls were all sporting pieces in the showroom and really brought them to life. I think the accessories like the perspex heeled shoes and boots, the jewellery and the bags will be the biggest sellers as they’re probably easiest to wear.
As the H&M collaborations go, this is by far the most interesting one they’ve done to date. It’s definitely not going to please everyone, but it for fans of Margiela, this is an opportunity to get your hands on some iconic pieces from previous collections without the hefty price tag.
Will you be queueing on November 15th? What pieces are you after?
