The SS13 Ashish girl has stepped straight out of a 90’s teen movie. No, she’s not the heroine of this story, but she’s the geeky girl in the back of the class, the girl with the DIY clothes, the big dorky glasses, and neverending bad hair days. She thinks scrunchies are amazing (they are, actually). She’s also the girl who gets a makeover mid-movie and is crowned Prom Queen at the end of it, because actually, she’s kind of cool and pretty underneath it all.
The sequins haven’t been forgotten, they’re just no longer the main story. Our girl wears faded jeans with a sequinned leg. Oversized men’s shirts are buttoned up wrongly and are missing a sleeve. Her denim jacket is tied around her body. She wears odd sequin socks, slouched around her classic Reeboks. Her scruffy hair is tied up in sequin scrunchies. She mixes and matches things that shouldn’t be mixed and matched, but in her own special way, she pulls it off.
Ashish is undeniably the Master of Sequins, but sometimes the incredible prints and colours take priority over the design aspect of his collection, which tends to be kept pretty simple. So, I was happy to see the designer trying something very different for a change. Will I be walking around in two-tone denim and sequin trousers next season? No, hopefully not. But I loved finally discovering the designer side to Ashish. The white backless shirt dress, shockingly simple, is about the opposite what you expect from him, and yet it worked. There’s still plenty of sparkly pieces left for the fans, but it’s good to know he’s no one-trick pony.
