Despite living in London for over 8 years now, I don’t actually think I’ve ever set foot inside the Tower of London before today. Why today of all days, you ask? Because I was invited to the official unveiling of Team GB’s Olympic kit, designed by Stella McCartney for Adidas. I can’t say I’ve ever had to take my ID and have a sniffer dog check my bags before going inside an event, so I immediately knew this was going to be a big deal.
Inside the purpose-built tent we were treated to a little catwalk show featuring some key British athletes – both Olympians and Paralympians – showing off the uniforms created for their specific spots, all designed by Stella McCartney. Being the host country means that all eyes will be on the Brits this summer, so looking good whilst still being functional is an absolute must, and I think Stella massively succeeded in the challenge – I love the kit! She took her inspiration from the Union Jack and turned into something slick, modern, appropriate, stylish and technologically advanced. Yes, yes, I know I’m Belgian, but I couldn’t help but feel a little patriotic and proud of Team GB as well!
The world will be watching, so by any means, this was an epic job with a lot of pressure, but I think Stella and Adidas managed this daunting task perfectly. This “collection” has been 2 years in the making and it’s huge: over 900 athletes over 46 sports all requiring a performance kit, presentation suit, training kit, accessories, footwear and “villagewear”, equating to 590 individual pieces, or 175.000 items for all athletes involved. That is a lot of stuff. A tribute kit will be available for the general public – you can buy your piece of athletic history here.
So, what do you think of the Team GB kit – yay or nay? Woohoo or boohoo? Let me know…!
At the launch this morning:
As incredible venues go, the Tower of London trumps anything I’ve ever been to!
