Middlesex University Graduate Show
Last week I attended Middlesex University’s Graduate Fashion show, showcasing the best work of the BA Honours Fashion and BA Honours Fashion Textiles students. As student shows tend to be, it ranged from the absolutely amazing to the downright silly, but that’s probably how it should be. If there’s ever a time when you can fully express yourself without the worries of sales or press, it should be now.
I think it’s quite hard and almost unfair to judge 20 students and their years of work in just 7 looks and mere seconds, as perhaps some collections need further info, a background story, a closer look – still, it was clear some people really stood out from the crowd and I had my definite ‘winners’, if that’s what you want to call them.
As I felt it was unfair to leave anyone out or just post one look of each of the 20 students, I had to edit down my nearly 300 pics to just 90. It is just impossible to highlight every collection, so I’ve picked my favourite 3 designers, but that doesn’t mean any of the other ones aren’t just as worthy. Please do have a look at them all in the gallery, there’s clearly a lot of (sometimes raw) talent in this group of graduates.
Above is a close up of one of Lithuanian Rasa Abramaviciute, who was my clear favourite. If you know of my love for Erdem, you’ll understand why. She manages to combine feminine silhouettes, gorgeous prints and materials with lots of texture. I would quite happily like to own EVERY piece from this collection (that blue silk skirt is just to die for), and I am 100% sure we’ll hear more from this amazing talent. She has already won the FAD competition last year, so clearly I am not alone in thinking this. Rising star!
Below is a look from Pa Ya Hui‘s collection, amazing in its simplicity and little detail. Below that is a cheeky one by Agatha Hambi, who apparently inspired her collection on a fictitious 1930s woman mourning a lost lover – I think it’s the dream collection for any of the Olsen Twins.
