Cafe Luc: a little bit of Belgium in London

I know I’ve never really done a restaurant review on here before, but I realise the blog has been really fashion-intense with all my London Fashion Week coverage lately, so I thought I’d throw in something completely different for a bit of a change. Food – my other favourite subject. I actually might make this into a regular thing, because I know a ton of great places in London which I’d love to share with you.

Yesterday I had the immense pleasure of having lunch at the still new-ish Cafe Luc on the increasingly fashionable Marylebone High Street. Cafe Luc is a joint venture between Belgian Julie van Oostende and her father Luc, after whom the restaurant is named. This was particularly exciting for me, as Luc is the man responsible for the very popular Cafe Theatre back home in Ghent, Belgium. Cafe Theatre has consistently won Best Steak Tartare over the past few years, and if there’s one dish that makes me long for home, this is it.

Well, I am homesick no more. Over the past 7 years I’ve tried a quite a few steak tartares here in London, but it’s never quite the same as back in Belgium. Cafe Luc served a top-notch, high quality bit of beef, wonderfully prepared and with handcut Belgian fries – I was transported right back to home, that’s how good it was. My companions ate tagliatelle with truffles and mushroom and artichoke risotto which both looked to die for. I was too busy scoffing down my food to take my camera out, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. We didn’t have time for dessert, but it all sounds wonderfully Belgian-with-a-twist, like the homemade salted caramel, vanilla and speculoos ice cream or the Crème Brulée au Nutella.

Marylebone High Street is already one of my favourite haunts in London, with amazing clothing and design shops like Kabiri, Matches, The Conran Shop, Skandium, Other Criteria, By Malene Birger, Theory, and many, many more. It’s a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street and Selfridges, but without the busy crowds and much more of a village vibe. So if you’re ever in need of a bit of a break after a long day of shopping, pop yourself down on the luscious leather benches at Cafe Luc, and I can assure you you won’t regret it.
