Alex loves… Wooden Sunglasses!
A while ago, I saw a picture of a model wearing wooden sunglasses. For the life of me I can’t remember where, who or when, but I’ve become obsessed with the idea. So, after a little bit of research, I’ve found 3 wonderful makers of wooden sunglasses.
Of the many, many, many things on my shopping wishlist, wooden sunglasses have just gone to the very top.

One of my favourite finds comes from US brand Capital, which consists of a bunch of young guys making their glasses completely by hand. They are all made from American Hardwoods (there are several wood choices) and use top of the range Carl Zeiss lenses. Just because these are wooden glasses, doesn’t mean they are of lesser quality. You’d expect a hefty price tag for these handmade creations, but with prices starting from $95 for the Bonnie / Clyde model and $115 for the round Ellie models, they’re actually a bargain.
The Ellie in natural cherry will be mine…

Shwood is a similar story to Capital’s. All handmade in the US, with a choice of different woods and lenses. The Canby model is a classic wayfarer, whereas the Govy and Ashland models are slightly more modern styles. Prices start from $98, and goes up depending on the choice of wood and lens, but still doesn’t break the bank. You can also get a gorgeous handmade wooden hardcase to store your sunnies in. Very cool.

A third, more custom offering comes from Chicago-based Urban Spectacles. All of the glasses are custom-made to order, so you can get your own requests in. A huge selection of models – both sunglasses and opticals – can be found in the gallery, to help you pick. Or you can take a trip to the atelier in Chicago, but I guess that even for me that would be a little bit of a trek.
