Gifts for… the Art Lover

I somehow managed to twist my ankle for the second time in 2 weeks this weekend, and now can’t walk yet again, so it looks like all of my Christmas shopping will get done online this week! With just over a week away to the big day, it’s time to get those orders in, so here are a few more gift guides for some last minute gift ideas! This one has some original ideas for the art lover…
Happy shopping!

1: DAMIEN HIRST (RED) BUTTERFLY CONVERSE, £90 Converse are always a classic, the Damien Hirst Butterfly print is fun and original and instantly recognisable to any art lover. It’s also a charitable gift, as the profits of these shoes will go to the (RED) incentive, which raises money for the battle against HIV. Look good, do good!

2: FORNASETTI PORCELAIN WALL PLATE, £118 each, from Farfetch.com I’ve really started to fall in love with these porcelain wallplates after spotting them at a friend’s house recently. It may be old fashioned, but the ever-changing B&W prints featuring retro beauty Lina Cavalieri are just beautiful and modern. I also really like the idea of having a ‘collection’, which can always grow throughout the years. Farfetch have a stunningly big collection of Fornasetti items, check them out here.

3: TATE MEMBERSHIP, from £52 a year.
Give the gift of art in the form of a membership to some of the best museums in the world. You get unlimited free entry to all Tate Exhibitions, access to the members rooms at the Tate Britain and Modern (which has some of the BEST views over London), a subscription to TATE ETC. magazine and the opportunity to go to special viewing events. For a little bit more, you can even give a membership + guest, so the recipient can take you along to all these amazing events.

4: DAVID SHRIGLEY BRASS TOOTH, $1,200 Give a real artwork for a change. This solid brass tooth is by Glaswegian cartoonist-turned-artist David Shrigley. Usually known for the witty, dry humour in his cartoons, Shrigley is fast becoming a bit of a player on the art scene (as I witnessed at Frieze Art fair earlier this year), so this piece could be an investment for the future. Edition of 80.

5: WOODEN BROOCHES, £7-9 from Smug, Islington If the budget isn’t quite as big as shelling out for a real life artwork, then why not buy some original little handmade brooches instead? These little wooden ones feature illustrations from children’s books. Smug is a cute little shop in Islington, which boasts a ton of similarly adorable stuff. Do have a look!

6: VINTAGE CAMERA PHOTO BLOCK, $58 from Etsy.com Etsy is possibly the best place on the internet to find truly original artworks by young artists, crafty people, creatives. It’s a great way of supporting talent as people who might not have the opportunity to sell their work otherwise get to do it here. The choice of great stuff is overwhelming, but I chose these photo blocks featuring 4 vintage cameras as I love the retro feel of it!

7: JULIE VERHOEVEN “BLESS YOU” BOX (2010), £950 each from Studio Voltaire I saw these tissue boxes a few weeks ago at the House of Voltaire pop up. They’re by artist and designer extraordinaire Julie Verhoeven (who you may know from her collaborations with Mulberry, Louis Vuitton, H&M, …) and have a great sense of kitsch and irony to them. The tissue boxes are laden with little trinkets up to the point of OTT, but somehow it works. They’re from an edition of 5, but all of them are very different. Blowing your nose has never been so wonderful.

8: FRANK GEHRY FOR TIFFANY TORQUE RING, £240 If you’re getting a Tiffany Blue gift box, let’s face it, it usually doesn’t matter much what’s inside as it’s great anyway. But the collection by Frank Gehry is something different, as the lines reflect the top architect’s usual style. A ring or bracelet that looks a bit like the famous Bilbao Guggenheim museum? An art lover’s delight.

9: ERDEM FOR V&A MUSEUM NARCISSE SCARF, £185 I managed to get Erdem into my 2 previous shopping lists, so why not continue a good thing? I wrote about the Narcisse scarf a few months ago, as Erdem collaborated with the V&A on this exclusive item to celebrate the launch of the Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes exhibition, currently on at the famous museum. Fashion, art and collectible in one swoop.

10: ROBERT INDIANA LOVE PAPERWEIGHT, £76 at Colette Nothing says merry christmas more than a paperweight, right? This small version of Robert Indiana’s classic pop art sculpture comes in several colours and is just a nice little item to have and to give.
