Alex Meets… Borne by Elise Berger

Meet Borne by Elise Berger, the new kid on the fashion block. German-born Christine, aka Elise Berger, contacted me a while ago to introduce her brand new label to me, and immediately I was sold. The first Borne collection is girly and frilly yet sophisticated, full of ruffles and soft colours and even softer jersey, and on top of that features some immaculate tailoring – this is every girl’s dream in-between-wardrobe. You know, those clothes you wear every day, but could just about get away with at work or even a party.

Last week I finally saw the collection in person at the H PR press day and I liked it so much, so I thought I’d share with you a little interview I did with ‘Elise’, who together with her husband is working hard to get their new label off the ground, somewhere between London and Barcelona. And now I’ve started hearing rumours of big retailers like ASOS snapping up the first collection, I am beyond excited to see where this story is going next… So let’s meet the woman behind the brand:

Alex: Hi there, who are you?
Elise Berger: I’m the “Elise Berger” behind Borne by Elise Berger, Elise is my middle name and Berger is the second half of my surname. My mum always said when I was younger that when I became a famous artist that would be my pseudonym, I hope she is right about the “famous” bit!!
I’ve just turned 28, have a gorgeous two year old son called Maximilian, and started Borne six months ago with my husband after we decided to change our lives completely and follow our dream of creating our own brand!

A: What inspires you?
EB: I get most of my inspirations when travelling, I’ve never really had my own car and so spend a lot of journeys on buses and trains. It gives me time to think, be fascinated by the crowds of people and generally drink in the world.
Art and film are also key sources of great inspiration, especially Rothko who I adore. Having a two year old gives you a very different perspective, even the Jungle Book can be inspiring!

A: Who is the Borne woman?
EB: The Borne woman is not extravagant, she does not dress uber-sexy because she is confident enough to be herself. Natural, confident and happy — she appears effortless while still standing out from the crowd.
We want our clothes to reflect the personality of the Borne woman, rather than the other way around.

A: Where would you like to see Borne in 5 years time?
EB: Over the next five years we will work towards building Borne into an internationally renowned brand, and look towards opening our own store. The most important thing for us is that as Borne grows we don’t compromise our ethos of quality, attention to detail and individuality along the way.

How did you get into fashion design?
EB: It all started with my grandfather who was a menswear tailor in Nottuln, a small village in North West Germany. I spent a lot of my time while I was growing up in his workshop falling in love with fabrics.
From that point on there was always this burning desire to do something with fashion, and studying in Barcelona allowed me to follow this whilst learning about a new culture and language.

A: What’s the one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
EB: A pair of really comfy shoes that are not only comfy but look great, I’ve been looking for some for ages and can’t find any so I know how important they are!!

A: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
EB: Wim Wenders, his film “Himmel Uber Berlin” inspired my graduate collection.

A: Is there a celebrity you’d love to see wearing your pieces?
EB: I would be very proud to see any celebrity wearing Borne but if I had to pick someone then for me Natalia Vodianova embodies everything that a Borne woman should be; successful, effortless, confident and stylish.

A: If there was a soundtrack to your life, what song would be playing right now?
EB: Intro by the XX, a lot has changed for me over the last couple of years and it is only now that it is all coming together so I feel like I am at the beginning of my journey with hopefully a lot more surprises still to come!

Well, all the best of luck, I’m definitely pegging Borne as my label to watch! In stores near you soon… watch this space!
