London Fashion Week Day 4

Other than Erdem, I had only a few of other shows on the schedule for day 4 of LFW.

Jaeger London

Jaeger is another of those typically British brands I’ve never been able to quite figure out. Just like Daks earlier this week, they’ve been around for many decades and yet somehow they still manage to make a comeback every few years. They’re not exactly renowned for their cutting-edge design, but more like wearable, feminine and elegant collections, perfectly suited to the average British woman – now is that a crime against fashion? Well, either way, they brought a very solid collection once again, plenty of nice little office-approved outfits, good winter coats, beautifully cut wide trousers, a must-have flash of fur here and there, and so on. I’m sure Plain Jane is jumping up and down with joy somewhere in Suburbia, but personally I found it all rather dull and a little too safe. Perhaps my boredom with it all is the burden of having to show right after my favourite show so far… Either way, the only highlight were the sheepskin-lined leather boots. Warm feet no longer means Uggs. Hurrah!

Paul Smith

Sir Paul Smith continued his tradition of showing his womenswear collection at Claridges Ballroom, always a classy setting for a classy event. Had my first Carine Roitfeld (Vogue France) spotting of the season, which meant all of the big fashion editors now had well and truly arrived. Paul Smith showed a pretty typical British collection, throwing plenty of references in the direction of the aristocracy (hunting outfits with flatcaps and updated Barbour jackets) and the Great English Weather (a cocktail dress in rainproof material? Mais oui, bien sur!). Other than that, there were enough pastel and floral full-skirted dresses to get a ’50s prom started. Paul Smith up to his old tricks, but then would you really expect any different of him?
