Chanel AW10

The AW10 show season nears its end today in Paris, and trust Karl Lagerfeld to take things to a whole new level.

For the Chanel AW10 show, the Grand Palais had been transformed into a giant refrigerator. Editors sat in front of a giant white box desperately trying to guess what was lurking behind it. When the covers were lifted, it turned out to be nothing less than an actual iceberg, imported from Sweden for the occasion.

As if the barnyard from last season (with Lily Allen coming out of the floor playing a set) wasn’t enough, Karl just had to go and out-do himself. The models had to wade through the melted ice, in the coolest catwalk we’ve seen for ages. (Did you catch my pun? Sorry… couldn’t help myself.) Quite a few shoes were lost whilst they sloshed through the water.

At least the models were prepared for the cold. Fur was the main theme here. Head to toe, like real polar bears: trousers, trims on coats, big shaggy fur boots, yup… even the bag. The biggest surprise of all – it was all faux fur – Karl is said to want to keep the real stuff for his Fendi collection.

If you look behind the theatrics, the showpieces, Brad and Baptiste prancing around in yeti costumes, there’s a classic Chanel collection in there. Tweed suits, gorgeous knitwear and some unbelievable eveningwear.

The Chanel Cavewomen stomping around in puddles of melting ice actually have a message to send about our changing climate. But the iceberg? It’s rumoured to be flown back to Sweden again. (Something with the water not being allowed to go in the Seine). Mixed messages, anyone?

Oh Karl… I love you anyway. What will you do next season, fly in a desert?
