SUNO NY

The NY theme will probably be a recurring one in the next few days, as my spirit (and sleeping pattern) is still in the Big Apple.

Whilst at Opening Ceremony, I discovered the colourful world of Suno, whose prints really sprung out at me. Founded a mere 2 years ago by former screenwriter Max Osterweis, Suno has been a great success story – not only is his line backed by the always cool Opening Ceremony but he got the presidential nod when Michelle Obama wore one of designs last spring.

The ethnic inspiration behind his prints and design comes from Max’s many trips to Kenya, where his mother has a retreat. The design is done in NY where he is based, but production is done in the 2 workshops he has founded in Kenya where he employs local talent to help create his line. The emphasis is on fair treatment and artisinally produced items.

Suno’s mixture of colourful ethnic prints reminds me of an early Dries Van Noten, but a younger, more affordable version. You can buy the resort collection online now at Opening Ceremony. Images in this post all from Resort 2010.
