While I was at Liberty a while back, browsing for a dress I probably didn’t need, I stumbled upon a few pieces by Michael Van Der Ham, a name I’d never heard of before. Stunned by their beauty and embarrassed by my ignorance, I immediately googled him, only to find that this was the Dutchman’s first collection.
A Central Saint Martins graduate with Alexander McQueen and Sophia Kokosalaki internship credentials, he was allowed to show his collection a just a few months earlier as part of Fashion East.
The pieces are all composed of different elements, draping techniques, lengths and fabrics, adding both interesting textures and colours to every item. Although he is essentially creating patchwork, Van Der Ham executes his pieces so exquisitely and elegantly it never looks overdone.
His name is on the list again for the Fashion East show in a few weeks – I cannot wait to go and see how he can follow up his spectacular debut collection.
So I’m probably about a season too late in saying this, but who cares: a name to watch, mark my words.
